Mr I.H. Burkill, from 1912-25 Director of Gardens, Straits Settlements, started the S.F., standing for Singapore Field number series, to which the whole Department and others contributed.

The SFN series was discontinued from Jan. 1st, 1959, and had been in declining use for some years.
