Born: 1888, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Died: 1955, Chesapeake Bay, 80 km W of Washington, U.S.A.

career:

Botanist who was educated and took his Ph.D.’s degree at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (U.S.A.) (1920); subsequently working at Geneva, in London and Germany; from 1923-24 Botanical Instructor at Michigan; in 1925 appointed Professor of Botany at Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania.

He worked in the Treub Laboratory at Buitenzorg from September until November 1920, studying the phenomena of periodicity in tropical plants.¹

His special interest was protoplasma, but he also wrote several plant-geographical papers.

Collecting localities:

1920. W. Java (between Sept.-Nov.): Buitenzorg, Tjibodas, and Mt Gedeh-Pangrango (also on Mt Sela, one of the summits);² E. Java: G. Tengger, Sandsea area.

collections:

The phanerogams of his collection were identified by C.A. Backer at Buitenzorg, the lichens by Plitt at Maryland,³ the mosses by R.S. Williams at New York, and the hepatics by A.W. Evans at Yale. 2 Java dupl. in U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US]. The collection comprised about 500 nos and all were later given away to botanical friends in London, at Geneva, Berlin, and Baltimore.
