Born: 1855. Died: March 3, 1895, in the roads of Batavia o/b s.s. Lübeck.

career:

Jurist who entered the employ of the German New Guinea Company in 1886, and that of the German Government in 1889, serving in the Bismarck Archipelago. In 1890 he was appointed Chancellor of the Imperial commissaryship of New Guinea, and went on European leave in 1891. Several times he acted as leader of punitive expeditions in the Bismarck Archipelago, and from 1892-Febr. 1895 as Military Commander of Kaiser-Wilhelmsland. He died on the voyage home.¹

Psychotria schmielei Warb. was named after him.

Collecting localities:

Former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland, NE. New Guinea. Arrival at Finschhafen (Sept. 20, 1886).-Bismarck Archipelago. Since Nov. 1886 stationed at Matupi in Neu Pommern (= New Britain).-1888. Setting out (June 3) for a trip from Blanche Bay crossing the Gazelle Peninsula to Ataliklikun Bay; after some trouble with the natives they reached the settlement Unter-Kambair.² -1892. From Simbang to the Siassi Islands (Oct.).³ -1893. Trip to Buramana Village (March 2), descending the bed of the Tolumbi. Sailing from Herbertshöhe (May 3) in the ‘Ysabel’ to the Upuos Islands; via Nusa to Kapsu on the N. coast of Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland), and back to the Upuos Islands; back to Herbertshöhe (17).⁴In Oct. to Herbertshöhe once more.⁵-1894. Accompanying a recruiting-tour to the western part of Kaiser-Wilhelmsland: Isl. of Gressien, Berlin-Hafen (Angal Isl., Seleo), Angriffs-Hafen.⁶ In the last quarter of the year to Finschhafen and for reasons of ill health to the Sattelberg, returning at Friedrichshafen (Dec.) after an 8 weeks’ stay without having recovered.
