Born: 1879, St Gallen, Switzerland.

 

career:

Was educated in the University of Zürich (Ph.Dr 1905); in the same year appointed Assistant at the Royal Ethnological Museum, Berlin, and from 1906-11 at the Royal Anthropological Museum, Dresden; since 1911 Extraordinary (1917 Ordinary) Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Anthropological Institute, University of Zürich.

He joined a German naval expedition from 1907-09 (leader E. Stephan, later A.F. Kraemer, see there), and subsequently returned to Matupi commissioned by the direction of the Dresden Museum to make investigations in former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland.

German Naval Expedition, 1907-09.1 Bismarck Archipelago. New Britain: Simpsonhafen (Nov. 3, 1907); stay at Matupi (Schl. to Solomon Isls); sailing in the ‘Planet’ (Nov. 28) from Matupi to Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland): Käwieng, Namatanai (29); Dec. 1, putting into a more southern port, Muliama; from Muliama exploring the island: visit to the Tanga Islands (March 26-31, 1908); New Ireland: in May exploration of the E. coast S of Muliama as far as Blosseville (or Toau) Isl. and back (7-15), and of the E. coast N of Muliama as far as Namatanai (21-.. ); Stephan falling ill on the way thither; stay at Matupi; boat tour to the Greenwich Isls, on the way crossing New Ireland from Karu to the W. coast; back to Muliama, where Schl. decided to continue the exploration on his own hand, notwithstanding Stephan’s death; Fêni Isls (Anir), off the E. coast of New Ireland (Sept.); to Namatanai on account of ill health (mid-Sept.); back to Muliama (end of Oct.), where Dr A. Kraemer (see there) and wife joined the expedition; transfer of base to central New Ireland: Lamussong (or Lamasong) (Dec. 18); in the meanwhile Schl. paid a visit to isl. Lir (or Lihur), opposite Lamus(s)ong (Dec. 12-Jan. 20, 1909), returning to the latter place (Jan. 21); Schl. exploring the N. part of New Ireland (Febr.-March); back to Muliama (early April), and paying another visit to the southern Siar region as far as Blosseville Isl., and subsequently to Namatanai and back; exploration of the region S and N of Namatanai; leaving the Bismarck Archipelago in July, and setting out to NE. New Guinea.-1909. Former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland, NE. New Guinea.2 Sailing from the Bismarck Arch. (July 10); Friedrich Wilhelmshafen (12), from where making trips into the interior, viz to the Hansemannberg, by boat to the Kaiserin Augusta River (= Sepik) and to the N. coast; tour to the Torricelli Mts with Schlechter and others (Aug. 28-Sept. 28); in E. and W. direction along the coast; sailing (Dec. 1) for Matupi, from where (25) on the home voyage to Europe.

Herb. Berl. [B]: small collection from Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland) (1908). He collected plants in Kaiser-Wilhelmsland too, at least on the N. coast.
