career:

A well-known collector and naturalist who was attached to the expedition of the Victorian Branch of the Roy. Geogr. Soc. Australasia to the Owen Stanley Range in New Guinea, under the guidance of W.R. Cuthbertson.

Saccolabium sayerianum F.Muell. & Kränzl. (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936), Dasycoleum sayeri C.DC. and other plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1887. SE. New Guinea.1 Port Moresby (July 8-19); departing for Kapa-Kapa (20); bivouac near Kopegoro, 4 miles ENE; march in E. direction (Aug. 2); crossing Nutmeg, Hunter and Musgrave rivers (4); Sayer River (Meneme); Kemp Welch River; bivouac at the foot of Mt Douglas, ascending the said mountain and making some trips in the neighbourhood; Margaret River, Alice Gordon River, ascent of Mt Gillies; march in E. direction (25); ascent of Mt Panton; Margaret River, Mt Obree (Aug. 30 summit); back at Kopegoro (Sept. 5); Kapa-Kapa to Port Moresby (9).

He collected for F. von Mueller; Mr C.T. White thinks that a number of his plants probably lie undetermined in the Nat. Herb. Melbourne [MEL]. Several of his plants were described by von Mueller and others.2 Duplicates in Herb. Decand. (Geneva [G]);3 U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US] (5 grasses). Herb. Copenhagen [C]: dupl. N.G. Scitamineae.
