He might be identical with James Pound (1669, Bishop’s Canning, Wiltshire, England; 1724) who matriculated at Oxford in 1687, graduated B.A. and M.A. in 1694; medical diploma 1697 with a degree of M.B. Having taken orders, he entered the service of the E.I.C., went out to Madras in 1699 as a chaplain to the merchants of Fort St. George, whence he proceeded to the British settlement of Pulo Condore off Thailand. Upon the mutiny of the native troops there on March 3, 1705, he escaped to Malacca and ultimately reached Batavia. He returned to England in 1706, where he was presented a rectory. He did important work in astronomy. His collections and papers were destroyed in Pulo Condore, but it seems quite possible that he collected some plants in Java.
