career:

Since 1800 in the service of the East India Company in Penang, after 1805 acting Governor, and in 1820 finally appointed Governor until his departure in 1824 (according to Burkill,¹ Governor from 1819-26!). In 1823 he founded Ayer Hitam Garden, Penang.

collections:

He gave his plants to Wallich (distribution see there) and it is said later to Kew [K]. In 1824 he presented a collection to the Horticultural Society in London, which was passed on to Kew [K]. At the sale of the Herbarium of the latter Society² plants of his from Prince of Wales’ Isl. (= Penang) were sold to Planchon.
