Born: 1856, Samitz, Silesia, Germany. Died: 1929, Genoa, Italy.

career:

Mycologist, educated at Breslau, since 1879 on the staff of the Botanic Garden at Padua, working under Saccardo; in 1882 appointed private teacher in the University of Modena, in 1883 Director of the ‘Stazione Agraria’ there, and in 1887 Professor of Botany at Genoa. He made a study tour to Ceylon and Java, in the latter island especially studying Myxomycetes in the laboratories of the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg and Tjibodas.¹

Author of some papers relating to Java.²

He is commemorated in the genus Penzigia Saccardo.

Collecting localities:

W. Java (Nov. 23, 1896-Apr. 1, 1897): principally at Buitenzorg and Tjibodas (slope of G. Gedeh). He visited the 3 islands of the Krakatau group in company with Treub, Raciborski, Boerlage, and Clautriau (March 17, 1897); the excursion was preceded by a trip to P. Merak (off the NW. point of Java).

In the German biography (see below) he is said to have visited Java and Sumatra; as to the latter island no data are known to the author.
