Born: 1859, Semarang, Java. Died: 1918, Batavia, Java.

 

career:

Was educated in Europe and came out to the D.E.I. in 1881 as officer in the Civil Service; in 1898 appointed District Officer at Manokwari (NW. New Guinea); from 1902-09 and 1910-14 Assistant Resident of North New Guinea; pensioned off in 1915.

He was the discoverer of Balanophora oosterzeeana Valeton, which was named in his honour.

 

Collecting localities:

1904. Making a trip from Sjeri, Geelvink Bay (Apr. 14) to the Anggi Lakes (in Arfak Mts, Vogelkop; 19-28) and back to the coast near Wariab (= Wariap) (30).1

 

collections:

In 1904, on his trip to the Anggi Lakes, he sighted the above-mentioned Balanophora,2 but unfortunately postponed the collecting, and on the trip back the plant was not met with. It was later described on material collected by Gjellerup in the same locality.
