Was educated at the Naval School at Amsterdam and went to the D.E.I. in 1888 in the employ of the Royal Dutch Navy; in 1902 promoted captain; pensioned off in 1915. After his return in Holland he was appointed Director of the division of Geography and Ethnography of the Maritime Museum ‘Prins Hendrik’, Rotterdam; he resigned in 1934. He was a member of the Wichmann and of both Lorentz expeditions to New Guinea (cf. respectively sub G.M. Versteeg and L.S.A.M. von Römer).1 The genus Nouhuysia Laut. and some plant species were named in his honour. |

2nd Lorentz Expedition to Dutch S. New Guinea, 1909-10. L.S.A.M. von Römer (itiner., liter., etc. see there) who undertook the botany department of the expedition, was not allowed to participate in the last stretch to the snow mountains, with a view to the necessity to minimize baggage. Proceeding from Top bivouac in the Hellwig Mts (Oct. 27, 1909); Treub bivouac in the Treub Mts (2360 m alt.) (27); Tigang bivouac (2000 m) (28); Papoea bivouac (c. 1670 m) (29); Nood bivouac (2523 m) in the Wichmann Mts (30); Wichmann bivouac (3081 m) (31); Hubrecht Valley (Nov. 3); Waterval bivouac (4); Oranje bivouac (3740 m) (5); Vallei bivouac (3570 m) (6); Wilhelmina bivouac (c. 4000 m) (7); Wilhelmina summit (170 m below the highest point) (8) and Ramp bivouac; Matigheids bivouac (3850 m) (11-20); several intermediate bivouacs (Lorentz still being a poor walker after his previous fall) on the way to Waterval bivouac (27); Hubrecht bivouac (29); Hubrecht Valley; Papoea bivouac (Dec. 5); Top bivouac (9-10); passing Erica summit to Perameles bivouac (12); Alkmaar bivouac (15), from where van Nouhuys made a trip to the Noordwest River (Jan. 3-13, 1910) and explored the Schultz River (27-28). |
