Born: 1854. Died: 1932.

career:

For many years plant collector in the employ of the firm of J. Sander & Sons, St Albans near London. He made entomological collections too. He lost all his savings as a result of the monetary deflation in Germany, following the war, and consequently straitened circumstances attended his late years.

Some plants (mostly orchids) were named after him.

Philippines.-In 1891 visiting the Moluccas: Banda and Timorlaut (= Tanimbar Islands), and on his way thither visiting S(e)krú (Skroe) on the W. coast of New Guinea.-Sumatra West Coast: mountains near Padang (Nov. 1891-Febr. 1892).-Natuna Islands (c. Aug. 1892).-Ambon: Hitoe, G. Wawani (189.).-1893-98. NE. and SE. New Guinea (Papua) & Bismarck Archipelago: Simbang near Finschhafen (June 1893), Friedrich Wilhelmshafen (June-Sept.), Duke of York Island (Neu Lauenburg) (Oct. 1893), Mioko and New Ireland (Oct. 1893), Ataliklikun Bay (= prob. Kambair-Bucht) (Dec.); New Britain (Dec. 1893); New Ireland: between Cape Carteret and Praslin-Hafen (Kambotorosch) (Jan. 1894), Normanby Isl., Milne Bay, Cloudy Mts (1894), Stirling Range, Suan, mountains near Mita in the vicinity of Milne Bay (2000 ft, Febr. 1895), Simbo (Solomon Isls, Oct. 1897), Louisiade Archipelago (Apr. and May 1898), Thursday Isl.-NW. Borneo, 1903-04: Labuan and Sarawak ( ? ).-Probably collecting till about 1908 (see sub collections).

New Guinea), Neu Pommern (= New Britain), Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland), Sumatra, Banda, Timorlaut (= Tanimbar) and the Philippines; orchids from Neu Pommern and Neu Mecklenburg.³ Herb. Kew [K]: some plants presented by Kränzlin;⁴ 12 nos from New Guinea and the Louisiades (presume 1898) and Sumatra orchids (pres. by Sander in 1905); Herb. Sing. [SING]: plants from the Papuan regions (pres. 1898), from Labuan (pres. 1899), Tanimbar (presume 1902), Borneo (presume 1903), Philippines (pres. 1908); Herb. Vienna [W]: with Herb. Reichenbach. C. 90 Philippine ferns at Kew Herb. [K].

Hort. Sing.: living East Indian and Philippine orchids (presume 1903-09); Hort. Bog.: living orchids from G. Wawani, Ambon (presume 1895), and from Sumatra (presume 1906).
