career:

Zoologist, at first on the staff of the Zoological Museum, Berlin, later Associate Curator of the American Museum of Natural History, New York. He made a collecting trip to New Guinea and later was a member of the Whitney South Sea Expedition (1929-30), visiting the Solomon Islands. In 1953 besides appointed Alex. Agassiz Professor of Zoology in the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University.

Author of ornithological papers.^1-2

Several plants were named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

New Guinea expedition, 1928-29.^1-2 Dutch N. New Guinea (incl. Vogelkop):¹ sailing from Java (March 1928); Manokwari and neighbourhood (Apr. 5-10); to Momi (Wariap) (Apr. 12), penetrating into the mountains, G. Taikbo (1400m), descending to Siwi; to and fro Momi (May 4-10); Siwi (till May 25); Ninei (800m); summit G. Mundi to Ditschi (1200 m); G. Lima (2870 m); Anggi Lakes and surrounding mountains (Arfak!) upwards to 2400 m (June 9); G. Dohoidjoko (and Hoidjosera); leaving the lake (16) and via Dohunsehik to Ditschi; Momi (24) and by canoe to Manokwari; from Momi (July 4) to Wasior (Wandammen) via Rumperbon (Amperbon) and Mios-War; to Wandamen Mts (6; Mt Wondiwoi); G. Moari (Mori Salvadori) turned out to be situated in the Arfak Mts near Oransbari between Andai and Momi; leaving the Vogelkop; Lake Sentani; departing from I(f)far (Aug. 18) to the Cyclop(s) Mts, climbing the summit (2170 m) more than once; back at I(f)far (Sept. 14), collecting in lowland and savannahs; to Hollandia (Oct.); sailing (Oct. 21) to NE. New Guinea, former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland,² collecting in the Saruwaged (= Sarawakat) Mts: via Aitape to Rabaul; Finschhafen (Dec. 8); Sattelberg (Dec. 14-Jan. 6, 1929); breaking camp and via Bolingbangeng to Nganduo (7); Junzaing (8), exploring the neighbourhood; return (18-20) to the coast; back at Junzaing (Jan. 24-Febr. 1); Joanggeng (1300 m)-Mongi Valley (3); Kulungtufu (3-7); Tobou (8), passing the watershed between the rivers Kua and Burrum (2000 m) (9); Ogeramnang (1785 m) (Febr. 9-March 3); past Burrum Valley to Kalde’ (1600 m) (March 4); penetrating into the mountains, grass plain of Dabezang (5); junction mountain rivulets Mongi and Busu, making camp (2600 m) (6-12), climbing the summit Titaknan (nearly 4000 m) (8-9); return, Ogeramnang (March 15-Apr. 3), spending much time on the collecting of plants; via Ebaba and Sopa to the coast, Bitala (= Hä-nischhafen) (6), and by cutter (9) to Finschhafen; by boat (27) to Salamoa; short tour in the Herzog Mts (S of Markham River):² from Malalo (May 7), Dawong (1400 m) (10) in the Kaidemo or Snake River Valley, returning (June 3) to the coast; embarking at Salamoa (12).
