career:

A nephew of the former, inhabitant of New South Wales since 1839, conducted and fitted out at his own expense an Australian expedition (see below), accompanied by representatives of various branches of science (see also sub J. Reedy). Notwithstanding his Parliamentary career, he set himself to the advance of the study of natural history in New South Wales; founder of the MacLeay Museum.

1875. ‘Chevert’ expedition.¹ Sailing from Port Jackson (May 18); Sue Island; SE. New Guinea: exploring Binaturi River (= Katau or Katow River) (July 2-10); Islands in Torres Strait, incl. Darnley Isl. (July 31-Aug. 12); mainland of New Guinea opposite Yule Isl., Hall Sound, ascending Ethel River (= ? Baxter River); Somerset (Sept. 8).
