career:

Miner and surveyor who explored Johore in the Malay Peninsula and made a crossing of it from east to west.

 

Collecting localities:

Malay Peninsula. 1891. Crossing Johore from E to W,1 leaving Johor Baharu (= Johore Bahru) (Aug. 2) o/b a steamer bound for Kuala Indau (11); upstream; junction of Indau and Indau Sembrong (14); Batu Gajah, G. Janeng; upstream again (21-23, highest point navigable); 2 days’ journey towards the SW to the base of G. Besar and G. Chabang-tiga; crossing the Tenany Hills (Sept. 1) into Ulu Segamat; northward towards Keratong and the Jekati River; 5 weeks later returning to Johor Baharu by way of Muar and the west coast.-1892. With H.J. Kelsall (see there) and plant collector Mat, crossing Johore for the second time (from Oct. 15-c. Nov. 6):2 leaving Johore Bahru by boat (Oct. 15), and the same evening anchoring at Tg Surat at the mouth of the Johore River; Tg Tenggaroh on the E. coast (16), Lake making a rapid survey of the S. Tenggaroh; Kuala Indau (or Endau) (17), ascending the river till Kuala Sembrong, and subsequently the Indau; Kelsall climbing G. Janeng (20), while Lake explored the rivers Mas and L’makan (= S. Emas and S. Lemakoh); back at Kuala Sembrong (21); journey up the Indau Sembrong River (starting the 23rd); Kuala Kahang (24); Lake Up the Kahang River with plant collector, while Kelsall explored the Madek River; upstream the Sembrong (30); crossing the watershed by land and from kp. Simpai on the Batu Pahat Sembrong going downstream to Patu Pahat (4); in the latter place staying for some days; G. Pulai (end of the year) (with MAT ? ).-1893. With H.J. Kelsall mapping the Sg. Kahang and the Sg. Madek, collecting in the Ulu Kahang.3

Herb. Sing. [SING]. During the expedition 1892 he was accompanied by a plant collector; probably no collections were made on the other trips.
