Kubary, Johann Stanislaus

career:

When a medical student, in 1863, had to emigrate to Hamburg on account of the revolution. He made the acquaintance of J.C. Godefroy who appointed him as collector on behalf of the South-Sea Museum. In 1868 he set out on his first voyage to the Pacific, visiting many islands and staying for a longer sojourn on Ponapé and Samoa. Till September 1879 he was attached to the Museum, and subsequently owned a plantation at Ponapé, which enterprise became a failure; he went to Japan in March 1882, and was for some months connected with the Tokyo Museum. In 1883 he planned to make ethnological collections in Guam and Palau for the Leiden Museum, which miscarried too, and then he was appointed collector for the Ethnological Auxiliary Committee of the Ethnographical Museum, Berlin, till September 1885.¹ Subsequently interpreter on German warships to New Britain, taking over the commercial station Kurakakaul on the north coast, and later in the employ of the German New Guinea Company in former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland as leader of Constantinhafen Station After expiry of his contract, at the end of 1891, he returned to Europe, but was appointed in New Guinea again for asecond period from April 1892-1895. When finally dismissed he sailed to Ponapé (by way of Manila), where he died shortly afterwards.

1884. Accompanying a tour of D.D. O’Keefe, from Yap (Jan. 13) to the Mapia Islands (= St Davids Islands), N of Dutch W. New Guinea (Jan. 21).²-1885. Neu Pommern (= New Britain): landed at Matupi (Oct.); Kurakakaul.-1886-91 and 1892-95. NE. New Guinea (former Kaiser- Wilhelmsland). In April 1887 he undertook some tours with the missionary J.W. Thomas (of the ‘Rheinische Missions Gesellschaft’) in the vicinity of Constantinhafen. On another tour he landed at Gorima (Nov. 8, 1887); mouth Gogol River; Astrolabe Plain and neighbourhood.³

He mainly collected ethnological objects, snails and birds.⁴ In Herb. Hamburg [HBG] (with Herb. Mus. Godefroy): South Sea plants. Part of his plants might have been sent to Herb. Berl. [B] with the New Guinea Company herbarium.
