Was educated at Tokyo Imperial University, taking his Ph. Dr’s degree in 1920; in 1928 appointed Professor of Botany at Kyushu Imperial University, Fukuoka. Towards the end of 1942 he came to Java; from March 1943 till the end of World War II Director of the Herbarium and Library of the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg. Author of ‘Formosan trees indigenous to the island’ (1936), of a book (in Japanese) on the economic plants of the tropics, etc. He is commemorated in Psychotria kanehirai Merr. & Perry. |

Leaving Ponape (Carolines) by steamer (Jan. 23), visiting several atolls S of Ponape; making stops at Kavieng (New Ireland) and Rabaul (near the Keravat Experiment Station etc.) in New Britain; Salamaua, from where flying to Wau, the gold-field in Morobe Distr.; return by the same boat, arriving Febr. 23 at Ponape-1940. Via Java (Buitenzorg) to NW. New Guinea,2 mainly in the ‘Vogelkop’, with S. Hatusima (see there): Manokwari (arriving Fehr. 20); Nabire (23-) (botanizing in the interior), at: Papaya (28), Chaban & Patema (29), Dal(1)-man(n) (March 1-4), Patema (banks of Boemi River) (6), Sennen (6) and Boemi (10); Mo(e)mi (19), awaiting the permission ofthe D.E.I. Government for a trip to Angi Lakes; Waren, S of Manokwari (March 21, 23 and 27, Apr. 3); Arfak Mts and Angi Lakes (Apr. 4-11); Waren (19); leaving New Guinea on Apr. 23.-He collected a few plants in Johore (Mal. Penins.) and Java; no dates known to me. |
