Born: 1853, Germersheim a.R., Germany. Died: 1919, Frankfurt a.M., Germany.

career:

Studied medicine at Munich University; from 1879-91 physician in the employ of a planting company (Senembah) in Deli, Sumatra East Coast, stationed at Tandjong Morawa.¹ During that period he made several exploration tours on which mainly zoological collections were made.² Towards the end of 1893 he was appointed in the employ of the Astrolabe Company, at first stationed at Erima and subsequently at Stephansort in former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland (NE. New Guinea).³ In 1895, when on the return voyage to Germany, he paid a visit to Sumatra, revisiting the island some ten years later in company with his wife. From 1897-1904 Division Chief of the Senckenberg Museum at Frankfurt a.M., where he founded a municipal museum for ethnology in 1904.

Besides of the below-cited papers, he is the author of many others relating to zoology, ethnography and geography.

Asplenium hagenii v.A.v.R. was named after him.

Collecting localities:

Sumatra East Coast. 1881. From Tandjong Morawa, Serdang (Aug. 3), via Patumbukan to the Batak Lands, Salamagura, Nama Djambu, kp. Durinn, valley of the Sungei Boaia (= Boeaja) to its sources, kp. Gunong Sinombah, Toba Plateau, Sibaribuan, base of G. Singgalang and Tongging situated on Toba Lake, staying 11 days, making trips to Pageh, Sipablangit Peninsula, etc.; returning via Sipablangit and Pageh, Bangusaribu, Sibaribuan and following the same route back to Tandjong Morawa (Aug. 25).⁴-1883. The same route as above (Dec. 3-26).⁵-Java. Sept. 1887 paying a visit to the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg.-NE. New Guinea (= former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland). He collected in Sumatra at least up to 1891. Nov. 1893-Febr. 1895. Apparently no extensive trips; he collected butterflies in Neu Pommern (= New Britain, Bismarck Archipelago).-S. Sumatra: climbing G. Kaba, when crossing from Palembang to Benkoelen (March-Apr. 1895).⁶-1905-06. S. Sumatra. Palembang Res. and Banka.⁷
