Born: 1809, Oldendorf, Westfalen, Germany. Died: 1879, Dresden, Germany.

career:

German-born, later naturalized; between 1844 and 1856 pharmaceutical chemist at Batavia. In 1856 he left Java for some time; in 1870 his license to practise as a doctor at Batavia was discontinued.

Some Malaysian plants were named after him, e.g. Cyperus goeringii Steud.

collections:

In August 1845 Goering’s brother, the veterinary surgeon H. Goering at Oldendorf in Germany, offered for sale a collection of some 600 plant species sent from Java by the pharmacist F. Goering.1 This offer went under the heading Japanese plants, but when the text is read only plants collected in Java are mentioned. Further it is said that the plants are numbered, but partly unidentified; in the next winter H. Goering is looking forward to a collection of Sumatra plants. No data as to this ever having arrived are available.

Zollinger in his ‘Verzeichnis’2 includes several Japanese plants, which he reported (l.c. p. viii-ix) to have found in a shed in the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden where they were exposed to decay. He arranged the collection in change for part of the duplicates, and mentions that it contained Goering plants. Goering collected at Decima and Nagasaki (Japan). The Japanese plants cultivated in Java Zollinger listed under Java.

Several of his plants were described by Turczaninow;3 the cited numbers range between 1 to upwards of 500 with the addition: coll. II; as locality often ‘Java or Sumatra’ is mentioned. Apparently a set is present in Herb. Turczaninow (= Univ. Kharkov [now KW, LE]). Herb. Paris [P]: some Java ferns, etc.4

Some plants of his are cited by Miquel;5 Japanese plants by Steudel and Zuccarini.

Japanese orchids in Herb. v. Römer, were described by G. Reichenbach (Bot. Zeit. 3, 1845, p. 333-335).
