Frey-Wyssling, Albert Friedrich

Born: 1900, Küssnacht near Zürich, Switzerland.

career:

Plant physiologist, educated at the Technical College, Zürich, and at the universities of Geneva, Jena and Paris (Ph. Dr Zürich 1924); from 1928-32 Botanical Assistant at the General Experiment Station of the A.V.R.O.S. at Medan (Sumatra East Coast); later replaced as University Lecturer and Assistant of the Botanical Institute of the Polytechnical College at Zürich; since 1938 appointed Professor. Dr. h.c. at Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Rhododendron frey-wysslingii J.J.Sm. was named after him; he was the discoverer of some new orchids, which were described by J.J. Smith too.

1929. Sumatra East Coast: Harangaol on Toba Lake (Dec. 29), 900 m alt.-1930. Dolok Pintau near Brastagi (Febr. 26); kp. Baroe near Medan; Dolok Baros; N. Sumatra, Gajo Lands: Takengeun (=Takengon or Takingeun) and neighbourhood (June 12-24), collecting in the rice fields, bloekar, and at Paja hilang near kp. Beubasan, on Boer ni Telong (2600 m) (June 16), and Boer ni Popandji (1895 m) (22);¹W. Sumatra, Tapanoeli: Habinsaran (c. 1000 m) (Dec. 28).²-1931. Sumatra East Coast: vicinity of Prapat³ and Toba Lake (Apr. 1-6); Sumatra West Coast etc.: Taroetoeng (in Tapanoeli Res., July 26); Peak of Kerintji (Juli 30-Aug. 4);⁴Sumatra East Coast: G. Sibajak, G. Piso-Piso, G. Sinaboeng, Padang Lawas (Dec. 22).⁵ In this year he paid a visit to Java, but no collecting was done.-1932. Sumatra East Coast: Sg. Pantjar. Returning to Zürich by way of the Philippines, Japan and the U.S.A.
