Born: 1886, Palembang, Sumatra.

 

career:

Entered the D.E.I. Army in 1907 and was pensioned off in 1925 as a colonel; in 1931 member of the National Council; afterwards back to Holland. Between the years 1910-15 he was a member of Exploration and Excursion Detachments in Dutch N. and S. New Guinea and the Schouten Islands.

Author of many geological and ethnological papers.1

Several species of plants were named bruynii after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1912. Dutch SW. New Guinea: exploring the sources of the Noordwest River, at first making use of a proa and since June 23 going by land, reaching an altitude of 2720 m;2 making a tour (Sept. 10-26) from the Bloemen River (starting from a point where it becomes unnavigable), by land to Tjemara River; following the left bank of Tjemara River upstream; exploration of the Great Moeras River and Tjemara River (Oct. 5-24); the upper course of the Pater le Cocq d’Armandville River (Nov. 14-25).3-1914. Dutch N. New Guinea, Mamberamo region: setting out from Pionier bivouac (Jan. 1) for reconnaissance of the region between the Apauwar and the Mamberamo; ascending the Mamberamo (Jan. 30);4 upper course of the Idenburg River (May 14-Oct. 7),5 in this period visiting the sources of the Sermowai and on the way back reconnaissance of the Poeveh (Aug. 29) and the Pauwasi River (Sept.); further exploration of the Mamberamo (Oct.), proceeding as far as Kalong Isl.; in Nov.-Dec. exploring the Mamberamo, Meervlakte and the Van Rees Mts.-1915. Schouten Islands (N of New Guinea): Soepiori (July 22-25) and Biak (Aug. 1-Oct. 13).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: nos 1-248 from the Mamberamo region (New Guinea) (dated May 23-Dec. 10, 1914); nos 249-468 from the Schouten Islands; also material in alcohol and 115 living plants.6 During the Mamberamo expedition he was assisted by mantri Ajoeb (see there) of the Buitenzorg Herbarium. Some of his consignments evidently were mixed up with those of A.Ch.T. Thomsen (see there). Dupl. in Herb. Utrecht [U].

The botanical results were published in Nova Guinea vol. 14.7
