Cuellar, Juan de

From Spain, was sent out to the Philippines for economic purposes; he layed out a botanical garden at Cavite in Luzon, of which, however, nothing remained in 1817.¹

Cavanilles seems to mention, that he spent 5 years prior to 1791, collecting, describing and drawing Philippine plants.²

In 1792 he accompanied Pineda (see Fl. Mal. vol. 1) on a trip along the west coast of Luzon via Laguna de Bay, Calaman, Maquilin(g) to the provinces Sur and Norte, Cagayan, to the extreme north of the island, returning via Ilocos and Pangasinan.

Besides by Cavanilles, he is referred to by Merrill, as a collector of botanical material in the Philippines.³

Kotzebue¹ states, that he sent natural history objects to Madrid [MA] and forwarded seeds for the botanical garden there. His first shipment of living plants and seeds, destined for the Garden at Aranjuez, arrived at Cadiz in September 1787; in February 1788 it was followed by a second shipment on behalf of the Nat. Hist. Museum and Garden at Madrid, and subsequently by others. The collections were accompanied by descriptions; the plants were collected in several Philippine Islands.⁴
