Went to Sydney at the age of 16, and two years later, in 1898, to Papua; he joined the Public Service of Papua in March 1902; in 1916 Govt Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, later in addition Commissioner for Native Affairs, frequently acting as Lieutenant Governor; retired in 1944; now living in New South Wales, at Chatswood. |

He sent innumerable specimens of plants to Australia for analysis, plants which had been held to have medicinal properties. He collected Ficus benjamina L. from Suau Div., Papua (cf. Engl. Bot. Jahrb. 67, 1935, p. 184). |
