Chaffanjon, Jean

Born: 1854, Arnas, Rhône, France. Died: Sept. 7, 1913, P. Tjitlim betw. Malacca and Sumatra.

career:

Assistant Naturalist of the Lyons Museum, 1881-82; teacher in Natural History at Saint-Pierre, Martinique, 1882-84; from 1891-94 in France; he made several travels in S. America between 1884-90; in 1894-96 an expedition in Centr. Asia, making mainly ethnographical, zoological and geological collections, but a small botanical one too. After the termination of the expedition, he founded a firm at Wladiwostok, which enterprise failed in consequence of the Sino-Japanese war. He subsequently went to Indo-China, where he settled as a planter; after a visit to the Malay region, especially with a view to inspecting new rubber estates, he settled in P. Boulang in Malacca Straits.

He is commemorated in Callicarpa chaffanjoni Lév.

When at Singapore (about 1904), he forwarded 6 cases, containing living orchids, collected on a tour to Borneo, Sumatra and Java, to Paris (received in the beginning of 1905).¹

In 1908, when still in P. Boulang, he sent living plants (orchids etc.) from the Botanic Gardens of Singapore and Buitenzorg, and from elsewhere, to Paris.²
