A plant physiologist who studied at Richmond College and at J. Hopkins University and took his Ph.D. in 1910; since 1911 in the employ of the Bureau of Science, at Manila, P.I.; 1924-33 Director of that Institution; besides, since 1915 Professor of Botany at the University of the Philippines. After his retirement he stayed at Manila until 1937; in Febr. 1938 he took up residence at Baltimore, having charge of the Botanical Laboratory and the Botanic Garden at John Hopkins University. He is the author of a large number of publications, especially concerning useful plants.2 |

He made a trip to Java in 1917,1 e.g. visiting Tjibodas (W. Java) from May 13-16; he made no collections in that island. |

Herb. Manila [PNH], in B(ur). S(ci). series, few nos; e.g. abundant material of Cycas wadei Merr. in Culion (posterior to April 1923), and some plants from Mt Maquiling (Luzon). Merrill in his Enum. Philip. Fl. Pl. refers to many plants collected by Brown; probably the same. |
