Bloemen Waanders, Pieter Lodewijk van

Born: 1823, Antwerp, Belgium. Died: Warnsveld near Zutfen, Gld, Holland.

career:

Entered the D. E. Indian Civil Service in 1850. He was successively District Officer in W. Sumatra, Palembang (S. Sumatra) and Bali (Lesser Sunda Islands). In Bali he was promoted to Assistant Resident, and from 1862-67 Resident of Palembang. After his return from sick-leave to Europe, he was appointed in Kedoe Residency, Centr. Java: he retired in 1876.

Collecting localities:

He accompanied Zollinger (itinerary etc. see there) on the latter’s Bali trip in 1857. When Z. was unable to continue the ascent of G. Abang (Sept. 10) on account of his health, van Bloemen Waanders proceeded alone and brought back a few plants, among which the new species Agalmyla waandersiana, referred to in Zollinger’s report of the trip.¹ The specific name is probably invalid, as to our knowledge no valid description was published.

Beside the above-mentioned specimens which were certainly inserted in Zollinger’s collections (see there), he forwarded a case containing specimens of Baeckea frutescens from Palembang to Hort. Bog. in 1865.
