Got a special training as Student Gardener in the Hort. Lugd. Batavum by Prof. de Vriese; Assistant Curator in the Botanic Garden at Buitenzorg, 1850-69, and subsequently Curator of the said Garden. By decree of May 10th, 1866, he was charged with a botanical exploration of New Guinea. When the steamship ‘Prinses Amalia’ did not proceed on the voyage, the original project was cancelled and Binnendijk seized the opportunity to collect in the Moluccas, and possibly on the way thither in Borneo and Bali. He published some papers in collaboration with Teysmann.1 Garcinia binnendijkii Pierre was named after him. |

Gedeh, and with Teysmann (see there) on the Mandalawangi, Tjawi; with Teysmann to the Vogelberg of Tj(i)ampea (= G. Tjibodas).-W. Java: G. Tjampea (= G. Tjibodas) (c. Apr. 1852); several times on G. Gedeh-Pangrango.-1866. Borneo (or misread for Boeroe?) ; Moluccas:2 in Ambon, Ceram and principally in Boeroe (e.g. at Kajeli and Wakoholo Lake). He probably collected too, when touching at Bali (Lesser Sunda Islands). |

[BO]: numbered in the H.B. series (a no 2748 from Bali, Beliling (= Boeleleng); 42 nos (+ wood samples) from Ambon (received Oct. 6, 1866) and nos 43-144 from Ambon and Ceram (received Oct. 25, 1866). Herb. Kew [K]: Java, Indian Archipelago 1859-66, 110 nos. Some pharmaceutical plants in Herb. Hanbury (London) (pres. 1865-69). He mainly collected living plants for Hort. Bog., a list of which is extant at Buitenzorg. |
