Scheffer, Rudolph Herman Christiaan Carel

Born: 1844, Spaarndam, N.H., Holland. Died: 1880, Sindanglaja, W. Java.

career:

Botanist educated at Utrecht University, pupil of Miquel; after graduating (Ph. Dr) in 1867, he sailed for Java in November of that year, from 1868 till his death filling the office of Director of the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg. In 1876 he founded the Economic Garden and the Agricultural School, and laid out the mountain-garden at Tjibodas; he is the founder of the ‘Annales du Jardin Botanique de Buitenzorg’.

He made some tours in Java attended by Mas Arsin (see there), and is the author of several papers on the Malaysian flora.¹

He is commemorated in the genus Schefferella Pierre and in many plant species.

Collecting localities:

Between 1868-80. W. Java: G. Hambalang and Kalapa Noenggal (1868 or early in 1869, with Teysmann); some trips in the environs of Buitenzorg (autumn 1870):² G. Pantjar (Sept. 2), via G. Tjimanala and Pasir Ipis (3) to G. Loehoer (3), G. Bongkok (4) and back to Buitenzorg (5); leaving Buitenzorg (Oct. 1), visiting Seuseupan (3), Rawa Tjankoang (= Tangkoean) (5), coffee plantation Pasir Ipis (6); many times on G. Salak, Tjibodas and G. Gedeh-Pangrango (Nov. 1870 etc.); in 1871 collecting in Priangan Res.: G. Wajang (May 28), G. Tiloe (29), Kendeng (between G. Patoeha and Tiloe) (June I), and G. Tangkoeban Prahoe; near Tandjong Priok and Batavia (Tjilintjing, Moeara Baroe, etc.) (Aug. 7-8); in Priangan Res. once more: Pasir Kiamis (Garoet) (Sept. 2), Kawah Manoek (21), G. Papandajan (22-23), G. Tjikorai (25-26); Bandjar, Kali Poetjang and Tjikemboelan(g) (Oct. 3 and 6), and Noesa Kambangan, S of Centr. Java (Oct. 5).

He collected in many other localities in W. Java of which the exact dates are not known, e.g. at Tjiseroea, Koeripan, and G. Tjibodas near Tjampea; at Tjidadap, Tjidjoelan and on G. Malabar in Priangan; with Teysmann in Kawah Tjiwedej and at Telaga Patengan on G. Patoeha; and certainly in many other places not mentioned here.

A Cyperus collected by Scheffer was wrongly supposed to have been collected in Borneo,³ it originated from the environs of Batavia; Scheffer did not make collections outside Java.

[BM]: 276 woods from Java (pres. 1872) and 67 plants from Banka (as Scheffer did not collect in Banka, it may be assumed that the presented plants were duplicates of Herb. Bog. [BO], but not of Scheffer’s collections); Herb. Kew [K]: plants from the Indian Archipelago (pres. 1870-78), certainly too only partly consisting of plants collected by Scheffer himself.

He brought some living plants for Hort. Bog. (pres. 1871).
