NHN Orchid CD-ROMs
A full treatment in traditional Flora Malesiana style of the c. 6000 species of Orchidaceae in the Malesian region seems at present an unattainable ideal. At the same time, conservationists, botanists, ecologists and other professionals, as well as orchid amateurs, are urgently in need of easily accessible and reliable information on this important plant family. Therefore the plan arose to assemble the currently available knowledge about Malesian Orchidaceae on a series of CD-ROMs, using the Linnaeus II software developed by ETI. With funding supplied by the Cheng Kim Loke foundation, the Australia & Pacific Science Foundation and Conservation International, supplemented with gifts and support by many additional organisations and individuals, the project started with a series of CD-ROMs on the extremely rich and at the same time poorly known orchid flora of New Guinea. To date five volumes have appeared, the final volume is in an advanced stage of preparation. In addition, owing to the support of the Netherlands Embassy in the Philippines, a CD-ROM on the orchids of the Philippines could be prepared. Unfortunately, the continuation of the series beyond New Guinea is at present impossible due to lack of sponsors.
Ordering: These CD-ROMs cost EUR 59.00 each. A 10% discount applies to orders of two or more CD-ROMs (any title).

2002. Flora
Malesiana: Orchids of New Guinea vol. II; Dendrobium and allied genera. ISBN
90-75000-43-x
Dendrobium is horticulturally the most significant orchid genus of New
Guinea. Together with the three closely related genera Cadetia, Diplocaulobium, and
Flickingeria it is the subject of this CD-ROM, which
was written and compiled by Mr. André Schuiteman and Dr. Ed de Vogel in co-operation with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew,
and the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. This CD-ROM contains about 3000
images, 29 generic and sectional descriptions, a database covering some
560 species, tools for identification, a hyperlinked, richly illustrated
glossary with over 550 terms, notes on cultivation, and much more; in
short: the largest collection of data on New Guinea Dendrobiinae ever
assembled. Treating one of the most attractive of
all orchid groups, with superb pictures supplied by dozens of first rate
photographers, this CD-ROM should be in the collection of every amateur
interested in these plants. It is also a must for professionals who deal
with conservation, cultivation, taxonomy, etc., of Southeast Asian
orchids. |

2005. Flora
Malesiana: Orchids of New Guinea vol. III; Genera Acanthephippium to Hymenorchis
(excluding Dendrobiinae s.l.). ISBN
90-75000-61-8
This CD-ROM reflects the state of the art in our expertise of another portion
of the incredibly rich orchid flora of New Guinea. It contains more than 2000
images, 643 distribution maps, 60 generic descriptions, and full treatments of
673 species and varieties belonging to the orchid genera Acanthephippium
to Hymenorchis. Not included are the genera Dendrobium
and Bulbophyllum and their allies. These are treated in Vol. II
and Vol. VI respectively. For every species a full description is given, with
data on distribution (including maps), synonymy, ecology, typification,
classification, etc. A key to the genera, a hyperlinked and illustrated glossary
with almost 600 entries (not counting synonyms), numerous references, and hints
on cultivation, combine to make this an indispensable reference work. As this is
not a taxonomic revision but a critical synopsis, it must be
understood that many 'species' on this CD-ROM will undoubtedly prove to be
synonyms once their taxonomy is thoroughly studied. This is especially to be
expected in such poorly known genera as Ceratostylis,
Epiblastus or
Glomera. |

Flora Malesiana: Orchids of New Guinea vol. IV; Genera Kuhlhasseltia
to Ophioglossella. ISBN
90-75000-99-5
This CD-ROM treats 19
genera (Kuhlhasseltia to Ophioglossella) with nearly 400
species. Among the major genera are Liparis, Malaxis, Mediocalcar,
Oberonia, and Octarrhena. For every species a full
description is given, with data on distribution (including maps in full
colour), synonymy, cultivation, ecology, typification, classification,
references, etc. An impressive collection of colour photographs and
drawings, both published and unpublished, complements the texts. Several
leading botanical institutes, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the
Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, the Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, and the
National Capital Botanic Garden, Port Moresby, as well as many well-known
photographers have contributed to make this CD-ROM conform to the same
high standard as the previous volumes. |

Flora Malesiana:
Orchids of New Guinea vol. VI; Genus Bulbophyllum.
ISBN 9789490137069.
NEW.
This CD-ROM, the final volume in the series, treats the mega-genus
Bulbophyllum. Two genera that clearly belong to
Bulbophyllum, namely
Pedilochilus
and
Saccoglossum,
are provisionally maintained here pending the formal transfer of the
species concerned. Some 635 species are treated in detail. For every
species a full description is given, with data on distribution
(including maps), synonymy, cultivation, ecology, typification,
classification, etc. In excess of 2500 color photographs and drawings
add to the value of this CD-ROM. A special feature of this CD-ROM, as
compared to prior volumes, is the about 1000 stereo and stereo-macro
images made by Peter Jongejan. These offer stunning 3D views of some of
the most intricate flowers in the Plant Kingdom. Several leading
botanical institutes, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Royal
Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, the Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, and the
National Capital Botanic Garden, Port Moresby, as well as many
well-known photographers have contributed to make this CD-ROM a must for
all who are interested in the orchids of New Guinea and Southeast Asia.
