Buphthalmum sive Oculus bonis
Rhodiaradix

Adonis vernalis L.
Rhodiola rosea L.
Voorjaarsadonis (NL), Spring adonis (UK), Buphthalmumos (Gr), Buphthalmum, Oculus bonis (Lat), Runds ooghe, Koe ooghe (Br).
Rozenwortel (NL), King's Crown (UK), Rhodia rhiza (Gr), Radix rosata (Lat), Rhodiaradix (apot), Roosewortel (ND).
Note: Buphthalmus is the greek word for bulls eye. The roots were sometimes sold by pharmacists as Helleboris niger, causing quite some misunderstandings. The flowers are pulverized together with oil to make a salve that softened hard swellings.
Note: This species originates from the mountains of Middle Europe and carries much smaller leaves than the at present cultivated form originating from Northern Europe. Dodonaeus wrote: 'Roosewortel wast in Macedonien ende in Hungarien. Hier te lande wordt zy in der cruytliefhebbers houen gheplant.....maer selden brengt zy bloemen voort' (This species occurs in Macedonien and Hungary. Here in this country it is kept by herblovers....but it flowers rarely). Hence, the sterile state of the specimen in the herbarium . The broken root smells like roses and would lessen headaches.
