Notes: Originally from Central America. This species is cultivated due to its curious balloon shaped fruits, with black seeds that carry a heart-shaped pattern. The plants carry tendrils in the inflorescence, a characteristic for many Sapindaceae. Dodonaeus was not sure where to place this plant, he was able to place the other 'criecken van ouer see' (herb from the other side of the ocean) near to the 'Nascaye' (nightshades), but Cardiospermum belongs to a 'ander vremd gheslacht' (another strange genus). |
