Halicacabus
Criecken van ouer zee
Physalis alkekengi L.
Lampionplant (NL), Chinese Lantern (UK), Halicacabon, Physalis (Gr), Vesicaria (Lat), Alkakengi (apot), Criecken van ouer zee (ND).

Note: This plant came into early cultivation in Europe. Probably originating from Eastern Asia and an early introduction by the VOC or arrived in Western Europe via the silk route. The brightly colored lanterns stay attached a long time and the berries contain alkaloids. This species reproduces via creeping rhizomes and was found in the wild already in 1554. According to Dodonaeus 'in soomighe bosschen ende bij die haghen in neere vochtschtighe plaetsen ende worden oock vele in die houen gheplant' (in some forests and near hedges in lowlying wet sites and it is also cultivated).
